Libraries are thus becoming places where AI-supported research, analysis and processing processes are not only used, but also critically reflected upon, accompanied and responsibly developed.
SUB Göttingen’s Commitment to Responsible AI Innovation
The Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen) is committed to the further development of library applications based on AI – always in accordance with strict scientific ethical standards – in order to ensure a reliable, transparent and sustainable information infrastructure. In doing so, it combines its many years of information expertise with technological know-how, cooperates closely with the scientific community and, at the same time, keeps an eye on the social impact of new technologies. For the SUB Göttingen, innovation means providing sustainable support to researchers and students and tapping into new potential for scientific practice, knowledge production and open access to information.
Göttingen Project "LibraryAI"
The Göttingen State and University Library (SUB), the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Göttingen, and the GWDG are jointly developing a virtual assistant called "LibraryAI" based on large language models. The assistant will answer questions via chat, summarize content, and understand scientific terminology thanks to AI models specifically tailored to libraries and research. The joint project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for three years starting December 2025.
